Australian Education Awards

Thursday, 1 August 2019  | Di - Assistant Principal Primary

It has been such a privilege for MECS Primary to be chosen as a finalist in the ‘Australian Education Awards 2019’ in the category of Primary School of the Year - Non-Government. You may have noticed the finalist medallion on our school correspondence recently. The winner will be announced at a special event in Sydney on 16 August. Over the last few weeks we have been busy putting together our final submission including an image gallery taken by former MECS student - photographer Peter Ingamells. We loved sharing our MECS Primary good news stories with the judges. Below is an excerpt of the final submission.

MECS Primary is a great place for students to learn and grow. Our beautiful Primary School of 275 students is on the edge of the Yarra Valley. We believe that all our students are uniquely and wonderfully created by God. The school vision of ‘Seeking the Kingdom of God in Education’ underpins all that we do and say at MECS. We have a vibrant community and dedicated, fun-loving staff.  We love our school.

As a school we feel greatly privileged and humbled by being selected as a finalist in this award. However, we do not see any accolade or achievement as definitive of who we are or what we do.

Education for us is about the passion we have to see all our students progress and accelerate in their learning, and about joyfully sharing in that journey with our school community. It is about the whole child and their growth to becoming citizens who contribute to their world in meaningful and wonderful ways.

Some of our innovations and achievements in 2018 and 2019:

Innovative, creative, joyful staff

Strong community feel and great parent partnership

Inclusion and innovation for our disability students - reshaping our Education Support into ‘The Greenhouse’.

Successful creation of ‘The Butterfly Centre’ for our students who learn and behave differently

MECS National Park - Sustainability program

Strong enrolment growth

Buildings and classrooms that enhance learning

Enhancing student engagement and driving student improvement with programming and data use (SMART spelling, Maths continuum)

Wellbeing programs: Positive Boys, Empowering Girls, Courageous Kids, Tough Brudder and Sista

Healthy culture of Professional Development with our staff

The words of the MECS community are the ones that count for us. Let’s hear from our staff, students and parents about why they love our school:

Staff testimonial

Working at Mount Evelyn Christian School is a slice of heaven in Education. Having worked in several schools for the past 18 years, I have found this school’s values to authentically follow the fruits of the Spirit; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control, not only with the students but with the staff. I can honestly say as a teacher, I have never felt more supported by leadership, more able to teach autonomously, more collegiate with my peers, and more enthusiastic to do my best. I believe leadership is the core of staff morale and working at MECS, we are continually led to follow the teachings of Christ through our everyday interactions with students, peers and parents.  MECS proves to be a place where people actively listen to new ideas with a willingness to change and evolve. It has restored my faith in teaching through the encouragement of the importance of pastoral care alongside academic excellence. Leadership values the individual teacher’s giftings and allows teams to work together to find the best teaching practice. The school invests in their staff completely and as a result, teachers invest in this school. (Lyse - Senior Primary teacher)

Student testimonial

The best thing about this school is the great, friendly, nurturing environment. We have lots of fun, child-friendly activities and groups, such as the STEAM Room, SHED, and the Butterfly Room. In the STEAM Room, we learn about science and technology and their functions. I printed a model on the 3D printer to show how tsunamis work. Also, we compete in competitions such as Tournament of the Minds, a creative thinking challenge against other schools. The teachers here are the best, who will help you with anything and everything. They’re kind, caring and respectful. In Year 6, the boys are involved in a program called Positive Boys, where we learn how to be responsible and considerate. There are lots of opportunities to work in small groups to research and learn about interesting topics. An example of this, is when we created a Google Slide presentation called ‘Good News’. We had to investigate something good that was continuously happening somewhere in the world and then teach the grade all about it. My subject was all about clean energy, including solar, wind and geothermal energy. I enjoyed learning about something new and teaching others about this important matter. (Ethan - Year 6)

Parent testimonial

I love that MECS is educationally holistic and spiritually vibrant in its approach. MECS offers a genuine learning alternative in a culture where becoming critical thinkers of the world around is valued. MECS does community so well, our families want to be around at school. From cooking meals for those in need, morning teas, our wonderful Get Togethers and parent partnership in education, it all makes for a joy filled, healthy school community. (Mim - parent of 3 children at MECS Primary)

We will keep our school community in the loop as we await the final outcome of our submission.
