Finishing Well

As we find ourselves at the tail end of another academic year, it’s crucial to consider the importance of finishing strong. The final stretch of the school year is a time when students often feel the pressure, but it’s also a time when they have a unique opportunity to demonstrate their dedication, commitment, and growth. It is a time to prove to themselves, their teachers, and the world that they can rise to the occasion and reach their full potential.

Finishing well in the school year is not just about securing good grades or securing a completion certificate – it’s about setting a precedent for life. It’s about being diligent right to the end. The skills and habits that students cultivate in these pivotal moments will serve them well throughout their future endeavours. As Colossians 3:23 reminds us, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters”. Students are called to be diligent in their studies, recognising that they are not just working for grades or personal success, but for the Lord.

Here are a few key reasons why it’s essential for students to be diligent until the very end:

  1. Learning Continuity and Momentum – The knowledge and skills acquired in the final weeks of a school year often set the foundation for the following academic year. If students ‘slack off’, they may find themselves unprepared for the challenges that lie ahead. Maintaining momentum in learning ensures a smooth transition and better retention of knowledge.
  2. Character Building – Perseverance and determination are virtues that are honed when faced with the pressure to perform at the very end of the year. These traits are not only important for academic success but are qualities that will serve students well in all aspects of their lives.
  3. Building Confidence and Self-Esteem – Progress is a fundamental element of education. Finishing the year strong is an opportunity for students to showcase the progress they have made, which can boost their self-esteem and confidence. It’s a chance to celebrate their achievements and recognise the hard work they have put in throughout the year.
  4. Setting a Positive Example and making a Positive Contribution – When students finish the school year with determination and strong work ethic, they inspire their peers and set a positive tone for the learning community.
  5. Opportunity for redemption – even if the year has not gone well for you thus far… it is never too late to make a good impression. The end of year provides an opportunity to rewrite your story and reputation to have you in the best position to also start next year well. A movie with a ‘slow start’ can always be redeemed by an ‘impactful ending’.

So whether students are finishing Year 4 or Year 12, ‘finishing well’ in the school year is more than just a necessity, it is a mindset that will prepare students for the challenges of life beyond the classroom. It is an opportunity to showcase their growth, build character, positively contribute to community, and inspire others. As the final chapters of the academic year unfold, let’s encourage and support our students to give their best, nurturing their potential and setting them on the path to success.
